MATERIAL ENGINEERING :
BASICS MATERIAL ENGINEERING:
INTRODUCTION:
The major classifications of
engineering materials include metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites.
The important characteristics of the materials within each of these classes are
discussed on this page, and tables of material properties are also provided.
CONCEPT OF MATERIAL ENGINEERING:
Sometimes referred to as
materials science or materials technology, materials engineering is concerned
with investigating the properties of existing materials and substances in
order to create new materials and items with enhanced chemical and physical
properties.
FOUR COMPONENTS OF MATERIAL ENGINEERING :
Thus modern materials
engineering involves exploitation of relationships among the four basic
elements of the field—structure and composition, properties, synthesis and
processing, and performance (i.e., the elements shown schematically in
Figure), basic science, and industrial and broader societal needs
PROPERTIES OF MATERIAL:
The material properties
are size, shape, density of the particles, and their intrinsic mechanical
properties (Young's modulus, yield stress, fracture toughness, etc.
MATERIAL ENGINEER IMPORTANT:
Materials engineering shows
us how to apply knowledge to make better things and to make things better.
Materials science and engineering drives innovation in both research and
industry in everything from aerospace to medicine.
ADVANTAGES OF BEING A MATERIAL ENGINEER:
Material engineers work
to develop innovative materials and products that work better, are easy to
use and use fewer resources to produce and sustain. They use current
technological methods to create materials for unique use cases across many
industries.
