Hydrogen Technology – An Emerging Technology in Mechanical Engineering

Introduction

Hydrogen technology is an emerging technology that can play an important role in the future of transportation, power generation, and industries.

Hydrogen is a very light gas. It can be used as a fuel to produce energy. When hydrogen is used in a fuel cell, the main by-product is water, making it an attractive clean-energy option.

🔹 What is Hydrogen Technology?

Hydrogen technology means the technologies used to:

Produce → Store → Transport → Use hydrogen

Simple flow:

Water / Natural Gas / Renewable Energy → Hydrogen Production → Storage → Transportation → Application

🔹 How is Hydrogen Produced?

There are several methods of producing hydrogen.

1. Electrolysis

In electrolysis, electricity is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Water + Electricity → Hydrogen + Oxygen

When renewable electricity such as solar or wind power is used, the hydrogen is commonly called Green Hydrogen.

2. Steam Methane Reforming

Natural gas is reacted with steam to produce hydrogen.

This is currently a common industrial method, but it produces carbon dioxide unless the emissions are captured.

🔹 Types of Hydrogen

Hydrogen is often classified by the production method:

  • 🟢 Green Hydrogen – Produced using renewable electricity.

  • 🔵 Blue Hydrogen – Produced from natural gas with carbon capture.

  • Grey Hydrogen – Produced from fossil fuels without carbon capture.

  • 🩷 Pink Hydrogen – Produced using nuclear-generated electricity.

🔹 Hydrogen Fuel Cell

A fuel cell converts the chemical energy of hydrogen into electrical energy.

Simple working:

Hydrogen + Oxygen → Electricity + Water + Heat

How does a fuel cell work?

  1. Hydrogen is supplied to the anode.

  2. Oxygen from air is supplied to the cathode.

  3. Hydrogen is separated into protons and electrons.

  4. Electrons flow through an external circuit and produce electricity.

  5. Hydrogen protons combine with oxygen.

  6. Water and heat are produced.

🚗 Hydrogen in Vehicles

Hydrogen can be used in vehicles mainly in two ways:

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle

Hydrogen is converted into electricity through a fuel cell.

Hydrogen Tank → Fuel Cell → Electric Motor → Wheels

Examples include hydrogen-powered buses, cars and heavy vehicles.

Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine

Hydrogen can also be burned inside an internal combustion engine, similar to conventional fuels.

Hydrogen + Air → Combustion → Mechanical Power

This technology is being investigated for applications such as heavy-duty vehicles and industrial engines.

⚙️ Applications of Hydrogen Technology

Hydrogen has applications in many areas:

🚘 Transportation

  • Cars

  • Buses

  • Trucks

  • Trains

  • Ships

🏭 Industries

  • Steel manufacturing

  • Chemical industries

  • Refineries

  • Heat-treatment processes

⚡ Power Generation

Hydrogen can be used for electricity generation and energy storage.

🚀 Aerospace

Hydrogen has been used as a rocket fuel because of its high energy content per unit mass.

✅ Advantages

  • Clean energy carrier

  • Water is the main emission from a fuel cell

  • Can be produced from renewable energy

  • Useful for storing renewable energy

  • Suitable for heavy transportation

  • Can reduce dependence on fossil fuels

⚠️ Challenges

  • Hydrogen production can be expensive

  • Difficult to store because hydrogen has very low density

  • Requires special tanks and infrastructure

  • Hydrogen is highly flammable

  • Refuelling infrastructure is still developing

  • Green hydrogen requires large amounts of renewable electricity

🔧 Why Should Mechanical Engineering Students Learn Hydrogen Technology?

Hydrogen technology combines several areas of mechanical engineering:

Thermodynamics + Fluid Mechanics + Heat Transfer + IC Engines + Manufacturing + Materials + Automation

Mechanical engineers can work in:

  • Hydrogen production systems

  • Fuel-cell systems

  • Hydrogen storage

  • Piping and valves

  • Thermal management

  • Hydrogen engines

  • Manufacturing and maintenance

  • Safety systems

🎓 Simple Takeaway

Hydrogen is not a primary energy source like sunlight; it is an energy carrier.
It can be produced using different energy sources, stored, transported and then converted into useful energy.

Remember this simple formula:

PRODUCE → STORE → TRANSPORT → USE

Water + Electricity → Hydrogen → Storage → Fuel Cell → Electricity → Motor → Vehicle

🌱 Future of Hydrogen

Hydrogen technology has the potential to become an important part of clean transportation and sustainable manufacturing. Mechanical engineers will have an important role in designing, manufacturing, operating and maintaining hydrogen-based systems.
